Animalia
Examples of Animalia
- Panthera tigris - The tiger is the largest cat species, reaching a total body length of up to 3.38 m over curves and exceptionally weighing up to 388.7 kg in the wild. Its most recognisable feature is a pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur with a lighter underside.
- Balaenoptera musculus - The blue whale is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales. At 30 metres in length and 180 tonnes or more in weight, it is the largest extant animal and is the heaviest known to have existed.
- Coccinella septempunctata - The seven-spot ladybug, is the most common ladybug in Europe. Its elytra are of a red colour, but punctuated with three black spots each, with one further spot being spread over the junction of the two, making a total of seven spots, from which the species derives both its common and scientific names.
- Pterophyllum altum - Pterophyllum altum, also referred to as the altum angelfish, deep angelfish, or Orinoco angelfish, occurs strictly in the Orinoco River Basin and the Upper Rio Negro watershed in Southern Venezuela, Southeastern Colombia and extreme Northern Brazil.
- Varanus komodoensis - The Komodo dragon, also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. A member of the monitor lizard family Varanidae, it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 metres in rare cases and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms.
Characteristics of Animalia
- A characteristic of animalia is that it's cells are eukaryotic, this means that it contains a true nucleus
- A characteristic of animalia is that it is multicellular (yeast 1 cell) meaning it is made up of more than one cells.
- A characteristic of animalia is that it is moile, meaning it moves around for it's whole life. Does not stay in the same place.
- A characteristic of animalia is that it is heterotrophic, meaning it is an organism that derives its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
- A characteristic of animalia is that it is asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual meaning it does not require a mate to reproduce. Sexual reproduction means it does require a mate to reproduce.
- A characteristic of animalia is that has the largest group of anthropods making up 70% of all animals.
Where is Animalia found?
Animalia are found all over the surface of planet earth. They may be found living on land or even in water. For instance, humans inhabit dry land and fish live in water. Wild animals like lions and tigers may prefer to live in forests. Birds usually nest in trees.
Fun fact!
Animals utilize aerobic respiration for cellular energy and food breakdown on a molecular level. Oxygen works at a molecular level to complete the metabolic processes necessary to turn fat and sugar into energy for the cells.
